If you received a phone call, text or email telling you to purchase gift cards for ANY reason, hang up and do not respond. Gift cards are for gifts, not to make payments to any person or company.
You may be told a family member is in trouble, you owe an urgent utility bill, or need to pay a fine to avoid arrest. These situations are never true.
