Protect yourself from a potential scam.

The increased use of social media has unfortunately made romance scams more and more common. Whether you have been chatting with someone on the phone, through text, or with an app, please keep the following in mind:

  1. Have you met this person? Scammers will often say they can't meet you because they life far away, or are always traveling for work.
  2. Are they asking for money? Once they have gained your trust, scammers will ask for money, and give you false reasons why they need it. They may say it is for an emergency medical bill, a plane ticket, legal fees, or even investment opportunities.
  3. Are you being told how to pay? Like any other scammer, they want your money quickly and easily. They may request you use unusual payment methods, such as wire transfers, gift cards, or money transfer apps.

If any of these situations apply to you, stop communicating with that person immediately. Never give money to someone you have never met in person.

Romance scams can happen to anyone. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need help.
